Craniosacral Therapy Information

This site is an independent site providing information about the benefits of craniosacral therapy and has no financial interest or connection with any craniosacral therapy organisation. The intention is to allow visitors to make an informed choice at a time when vested interests are attempting to prevent access to alternative and complementary therapies.

Craniosacral Therapy Information is owned and maintained by a former research scientist who believes that many conventional treatments can be counter productive in the longer term, and that a natural and non-invasive approach can be beneficial to overall health.

I believe that the word ‘scientific’ has been hijacked by a medical industry more interested in making money than restoring good health, and that a more truly open and scientific approach should include alternative ways of thinking about health.

For more on this please see the page on medical conditions, and if you are brave, have a look at the news page.

As a former scientist who worked for several years in the research laboratories of a multinational pharmaceutical and chemical company, I am amazed how many of the medical 'breakthroughs'  we hear about are actually commercial modifications of alternative and traditional therapies, and I have no doubt that one day craniosacral therapy will be recognised by medical scientists who are motivated by a desire to improve health rather than make profits.

I now work in the field of science education, mainly in primary schools, with a Science for Children project, encouraging and motivating children to develop an interest in science, through developing thinking and questioning skills. It is essential that children develop an open attitude to new ideas, and this is achieved by teaching an understanding of ideas and evidence in science. This work is enhanced  through the performance of  entertaining science shows for primary schools, enabling children to learn that science is fun!

The purpose of this site is to provide the public with information about Craniosacral Therapy

Introduction to Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapists recognise health as an active principle. This health is the expression of life - an inherent ordering force, a natural internal intelligence. Craniosacral Therapy is a subtle and profound healing form which assists this natural bodily intelligence.

It is clear that a living human organism is immensely complex and requires an enormous amount of internal organisation. Craniosacral Therapy helps nurture these internal ordering principles. It helps increase physical vitality and well-being, not only effecting structural change, but also having much wider implications e.g. improving interpersonal relationships, managing life more appropriately etc.

Dr William Sutherland, an American osteopath, discovered intrinsic movements of the bones of the skull around the turn of the last century. His further research revealed different rhythmic tidal motions in the body. These movements, which can be measured with delicate scientific instruments, are a direct expression of the health of the system.

As research continued it became apparent that these movements are inextricably linked with not only physical health but also mental and emotional health. Palpation of these tide-like motions allows Craniosacral therapists to facilitate change in areas of restriction. This restriction of movement corresponds to a lack of the capacity of the life force to express its self-healing. This absence of health may result in disease or a sense of something missing or numbness.

The whole of our life history is held in our physical form. An integral part of this work is the patient's developing awareness of how their story is held and how it unfolds. We are a unit of life function and this is completely respected in Craniosacral Therapy.

The work can address issues in whatever way the client wishes; physical aches and pains, acute and chronic disease, emotional or psychological disturbances, or simply developing well-being, health and vitality.

Craniosacral Therapy is so gentle that it is suitable for babies, children, and the elderly, as well as adults; and also in fragile or acutely painful conditions. As a whole-body therapy, treatment may aid almost every condition, raising the vitality and enabling the body's own self-healing process to be utilised.
